At 06:20 on a mid-October morning in Göreme the valleys are still blue and the first burners are already firing. Sunrise is at 06:49. By the time the light reaches the tops of the tuff cones the fleet is up, and you have roughly eighty-five minutes before the sun climbs high enough to flatten everything it has just made beautiful.
Six months earlier, in mid-April, that whole sequence runs three quarters of an hour earlier and the day it opens is two hours longer. Those two numbers, and the rainfall figures underneath them, are why we keep pointing couples at April and October rather than the months on either side.
Cappadocia sits on the Anatolian plateau at around 1,200 metres. That altitude is why pre-dawn is genuinely cold in months you would expect to be mild, and why the region behaves like continental Anatolia rather than the Turkish coast. Here is what each month gives you, and what we do with it.
April or October: which one we would book
October, by a short margin. Its first three weeks hold around eleven hours of daylight, low warm sun, and balloon odds close to six mornings in seven. Site hours stay on the summer timetable until 31 October. April matches October for light and beats it for green valleys, but it is the wettest month of the Cappadocian year.

Sunrise times and day lengths below are for the middle of each month at Göreme. Türkiye stays on UTC+3 all year, so nothing in this table jumps by an hour in spring or autumn.

The first week of each month is not the last
Inside April, sunrise moves from 06:26 on the 1st to 05:45 on the 30th, and sunset from 19:04 to 19:31. That is an hour and nine minutes of daylight gained in thirty days. October runs the same film backwards and loses an hour and twelve minutes. A couple arriving on 3 October and a couple arriving on 29 October are planning two different days, which is why we ask for your date before we design anything and why the planning fundamentals start with the calendar rather than the location list.
When April or October stops being the better choice
Mid-July to mid-August is the one we push hardest against. Highs sit around 32°C, the coach parties are at their annual maximum, and although the balloon record is excellent, everything between 09:00 and 18:00 is unusable for anything except shade and swimming pools. If your window is fixed to school holidays, we move the whole day to the two ends of it and put the middle of it indoors. If your window is flexible, late September gives you nearly identical flying odds with fifteen fewer degrees at noon.
February and March are the other pair we redirect. Across a full year roughly one morning in three is grounded in Cappadocia, and that average is carried almost entirely by winter and early spring: January alone accounts for something close to seven mornings in ten. March gives you neither reliable lift-off nor green valleys, because the vegetation has not woken up yet. The fix is usually four weeks later.
If snow-dusted fairy chimneys are the actual reason you chose Cappadocia, we do not talk you out of winter. We build it properly instead: three consecutive mornings held for the balloon, a ceremony hour set in the afternoon when the ground has warmed, and a ground-level version of every frame that would otherwise have needed the basket. Winter here is quiet in a way October never is, and the light at 07:57 is beautiful. Tell us that snow matters and we plan for it rather than around it.
Where the first light lands, and how long it lasts
The thing that changes your photographs between April and October is not temperature, it is the compass. In mid-April the sun clears the horizon at about 77 degrees, north of due east. In mid-October it comes up at about 100 degrees, south of east. Twenty-three degrees sounds abstract until you are standing in Rose Valley at 06:40 waiting for one specific rock face to catch, and it lights the wrong wall.
Across the month of April that bearing swings from 84 degrees on the 1st to 70 degrees on the 30th. In October it travels from 93 to 107. We hold different first positions for the early and late halves of both months for exactly that reason.
The length of the good light is more even than people expect. From sunrise to the sun reaching 15 degrees above the horizon takes about 82 minutes in mid-April and about 85 in mid-October. The very low band, sun between the horizon and 6 degrees, lasts a little over half an hour in both. What differs is the other end of the day. Mid-April sunset is 19:17, so vows at 18:00 still sit in warm side light and dinner happens outdoors. Mid-October sunset is 18:03, which pulls the ceremony hour back to somewhere around 16:30 and makes the afternoon feel unhurried rather than rushed. January is the outlier worth knowing about. The sun is so low that the walk from sunrise to 15 degrees takes a full 100 minutes, the longest warm window of the year. It is attached to the shortest day and the least cooperative mornings, which is the trade winter always asks you to make.
Long hours, short hours: what the season opens and closes
Türkiye’s culture ministry runs a summer timetable from 1 April to 31 October and a winter one from 1 November to 31 March. At the Göreme Open Air Museum, 1.5 kilometres from the centre of Göreme, that is the difference between a 19:00 close and a 17:00 close. Both of our two recommended months sit inside the summer season, and October sits inside it right up to the last day. From 1 November the ticketed sites shut two hours earlier, which quietly removes the late-afternoon hour at Paşabağı, five kilometres from Avanos, and at every other ticketed valley. The Museum Pass Cappadocia covers the region’s main sites and runs for three days from first use, which is usually the shape of an elopement trip anyway.
Balloons are the other calendar. Flights run all year, but only in the sunrise window, because the air column over the valleys is stable then and unsettled by mid-morning. The decision to fly is made centrally by Türkiye’s civil aviation authority each morning rather than by individual operators, so the whole region flies or the whole region waits. Aerial filming is a separate permission again: drones are registered with the same authority, and Göreme National Park is protected ground where aerials need clearance in advance and a time window that does not overlap the fleet. We sort that before the timeline is written, and if it is not going to be granted we say so early and plan the film without it.
The version of the morning that works without balloons
Every day we build has a second version, written before anyone flies to Türkiye. It is not a vague promise to improvise. It names the alternative locations, chosen by wind direction rather than by preference, and it moves the ceremony hour rather than cancelling it. A north wind sends us to the sheltered side of Pigeon Valley below Uçhisar. Rain sends us to cave interiors and rock-cut terraces where the light is soft and the walls do the work. A grounded fleet turns a ridge sunrise into a valley-floor sunrise, and you generally cannot tell from the results which version happened.
October is exactly why we prefer two people on the ground. Eleven hours of daylight and an 85-minute warm window do not stretch, and the best moment of the morning frequently happens in two places at once: the basket lifting with one of you in it, and the ridge where the other view exists. One photographer can cover one of those. A photographer and a filmmaker working as a pair cover both, and the film ends up with the audio of the vows rather than a reconstruction of them. Is April or October better for a Cappadocia elopement?
October, marginally. It is drier than April, its balloon record is stronger, and site hours stay long until 31 October. April wins on green valleys and gives you two extra hours of daylight, so if you want a long day with a late outdoor dinner, April is the better fit.

How many mornings should we allow for the balloon?
Two in April or October, three between November and March. Because the fly-or-wait decision is regional and made at dawn, extra mornings are the only real insurance. We build them into the timeline as usable days rather than as spare ones, so nothing is wasted if the first morning works.
Can you fly a drone over the valleys for our film?
Where it is cleared, yes. Drones are registered with Türkiye’s civil aviation authority, and Göreme National Park is protected ground requiring advance permission and a time window separate from the balloon fleet. We confirm both during planning, then design the aerial sequences around the window we actually hold.
Is late October still warm enough for an outdoor ceremony?
Yes, with the timing shifted. Late October loses daylight fast, an hour and twelve minutes across the month, and sunset on the 31st is 17:42. We put vows in the mid to late afternoon while the ground still holds the day’s warmth, rather than at first light when the plateau is at its coldest.
April or October: choosing the actual sunrise
If your dates are open, take the first three weeks of October and give yourself two mornings for the balloon. If green valleys matter more than short odds, take the second half of April and accept that one of your days may be wet.
