The Loggia Durini stands at the very tip of the Lavedo peninsula. Three arches, a stone floor, water on both sides, and Bellagio sitting directly across the lake. It is the frame that brought you here, and it is also, for most of the year, a public museum garden with a ticket desk at the gate.
Villa del Balbianello belongs to FAI, Italy’s national trust, which has cared for the property since 1988 under the terms of Guido Monzino’s will. FAI opens the garden to visitors at 10:00 and takes its last park entry at 17:00. Outside the fullest weeks of the calendar it closes to the public two days a week. Almost everything that is expensive about marrying on this peninsula, and almost everything that is good about it, comes out of those hours.
FAI does not publish a wedding tariff. That is why the figures circulating on planner blogs contradict each other by a factor of five, and why we are not going to add another invented range to the pile. What follows is what is actually knowable: which fees exist, who sets them, what moves them, and what the museum’s opening hours do to the shape of your day.
The number FAI will not print
There is no published price list for a wedding at Villa del Balbianello. FAI quotes each date on its own, and the figure moves with which space you use, how long you hold it, and whether the villa is closed to the public that day. The civil ceremony, boat transfers, suppliers and beds elsewhere are all billed separately.
Open at ten, last ticket at five
Balbianello runs a museum calendar, and it is unusually specific. The season opens in the second half of February on named weekend days only. From the middle of March the villa is open daily except two days a week, currently Monday and Wednesday when they are not public holidays, from 10:00 to 18:00, with the last park entry at 17:00 and the last guided tour of the interiors at 16:00. By November the day shortens to 17:00 with last entry at 16:00. Booking is obligatory, guided tours of the rooms run in groups of no more than 16 people, and FAI spaces those groups at least fifteen minutes apart.
Read that calendar as a wedding planner rather than a visitor and three windows appear. The hour before the gates open, when the peninsula is completely empty and the light is doing its best work. The evening, once the last ticket holders have gone back down the path. And the closed days, which are the only realistic route to having the garden and the loggia genuinely to yourselves in the middle of the day.
FAI’s own events pages set out what is possible on the property: civil or symbolic wedding ceremonies, and aperitivi or dinners for up to 130 guests. The same pages state something most cost guides skip, that wedding photography at the property is chargeable and must be booked in advance. There is no version of this where you buy a garden ticket, walk out with a photographer and a bouquet, and treat the loggia as a free backdrop.
Scale is worth knowing too. This is consistently FAI’s most-visited property, and in one recent season it passed 140,000 visitors by the end of September. In a documented year it hosted around 120 weddings, of which 25 were legally binding civil ceremonies celebrated under an agreement with the Comune di Tremezzina. The other ninety-odd couples married symbolically here and handled the legal side elsewhere, which tells you more about how this place is actually used than any brochure will.
The boat, the footpath, and twenty-five minutes in good shoes
The address is Via Guido Monzino 1, in Lenno, in the comune of Tremezzina. No road reaches the villa. You either walk the lakeside footpath from the Lenno promenade, which takes about twenty-five minutes and climbs over the neck of the peninsula before dropping down to the gate, or you take the shuttle boat across from the lakefront by the Lido di Lenno, a crossing of a few minutes that lands you at the dock below the loggia.
In wedding clothes, those two options are not equivalent. The footpath is gravel and worn stone with a real gradient in the middle, shaded most of the way, and it is a genuinely pleasant walk in trainers. A long dress collects grit on the climb, a train is unmanageable without someone carrying it, and heels are the one thing we quietly talk people out of. Our working plan for almost every couple is the same: dress at the hotel, cross by water with the hem off the deck, and walk the path back down in the evening when it is downhill, cooler, and the light on the way out is better than anything you will get standing still.
The property itself is terraced. Between the dock, the Loggia Durini at the tip, and the upper gardens there are flights of stone steps and gravel paths, so the internal moves of the day cost minutes and need thinking about rather than improvising. Lenno sits on the Regina, the lake road, roughly forty minutes up from Como when the traffic behaves and considerably longer on an August afternoon. Parking on the Lenno lakefront is limited, which matters if guests are driving themselves rather than arriving by boat with you.
The loggia points east, and that changes the hour
This is the part almost every page about Balbianello gets wrong, and it is the part worth reading twice. The peninsula runs out into the lake with the loggia at its eastern end, looking straight across the water at Bellagio, with Isola Comacina about 1,500 meters behind you to the west. That geometry decides your ceremony hour.
In the morning, the sun lifts over the mountains of the eastern shore and comes down the lake face-on into the three arches. It is the one hour when the loggia is lit rather than silhouetted, and it happens before the gates open. In the late afternoon the opposite occurs. The ridge behind Lenno takes the sun early, so the villa and its terraces slide into a broad, even shade while Bellagio and the eastern shore across the water are still glowing. A sunset ceremony under the loggia is, in practice, a shade ceremony with a beautifully lit view behind it.
That is not a flaw. Soft, directionless light on a stone loggia is kind to faces and it holds detail in a white dress that direct sun destroys. It also means the classic golden hour photograph you may have in mind is a frame taken from the water looking back at the peninsula, not one taken standing under the arches. The loggia is also narrow, which is where working as one team stops being a talking point and becomes practical. There is room under those arches for a couple, an officiant, a handful of people, and two of us, but not much more. A photographer and a filmmaker who met that morning will be standing in each other’s frames within a minute. Ours divide the arches before anyone walks in, and one of them works from the terrace above while the other holds the water side. The wind coming off the open lake is the real audio problem here, not the acoustics, so on an Expedition day the microphones go on early, low and close rather than being adjusted during your vows.

The useful way to think about a Balbianello budget is not one number but a list of separate desks, each with its own rules. Nobody bundles these for you.

Permit and venue fees are always paid by the couple directly. When the breva comes up
Lake Como has a working weather pattern. Mornings are usually still, and on fine days the breva rises from the south around the middle of the day and puts a chop on the water. A crossing that is glass at 08:00 can be lively at 13:00, so we plan the water arrival with the footpath held in reserve and a decision point early enough to matter. Light rain is less of a problem than people expect, because the Loggia Durini is a roofed portico and the covered loggia higher up the property takes a full ceremony if the weather sets in properly.
Who gets the most out of the peninsula
This place rewards couples who are genuinely interested in the constraint. If the idea of a 07:00 start, an empty garden and a boat back to breakfast sounds like the best part of the plan rather than the trade-off, Balbianello will give you something no private estate on the lake can match. The same is true of couples who want the arrival by water and a short, contained ceremony with very few people in it. That is what the loggia is built for.

Common questions
Can we get legally married at Villa del Balbianello or only symbolically?
Both are possible. FAI’s own material lists civil and symbolic ceremonies, and legally binding civil weddings are celebrated by an officer of the Comune di Tremezzina under an agreement with the property. In practice most couples here choose the symbolic route and register their marriage at home, and the legal option needs the earliest start of anything in the plan.
Will there be tourists in our wedding photographs?
Between 10:00 and about 17:30 on an open day, yes, in the gardens and on the paths. FAI runs interior tours in groups of up to 16 with at least fifteen minutes between them, so the flow is steady rather than sudden. Before the gates open and on the two closed days each week, the peninsula is empty.
Do we have to arrive at the villa by boat?
No. The lakeside footpath from the Lenno promenade takes about twenty-five minutes and reaches the same gate. Most couples cross by water and walk the path back down in the evening, which is the easier direction in wedding clothes and the better one for photographs.
Is there anywhere to get ready or change out of walking shoes?
Not on the property, which is a museum rather than a hotel and has no guest rooms. Getting ready happens at your accommodation in Lenno, Tremezzo or Bellagio, and we build the crossing time and the last adjustments into the timeline so nothing is rushed at the dock.
How many guests can we bring to the loggia?
FAI’s events material puts aperitivi and dinners at up to 130 guests across the property, though the loggia at the tip is a small space and most of the days we work here have fewer than twenty people on them. Our fee is the same either way. Guest numbers change permits, boats and timing, not the price.
Can you fly a drone over the peninsula?
Aerials need FAI’s permission alongside the national rules for flying in Italy, so we confirm both in writing before any part of the film depends on them. Where it is cleared, the shot that explains this place is the pull back from the loggia to the whole peninsula.
