On June 15 the almanac gives Bled a sunrise of 5:11am. That is not when the light arrives. In midsummer the sun comes up on a bearing of about 55 degrees, well round to the northeast, and it has to climb over the Karavanke before anything warm reaches the water, so the island sits in flat blue for a good twenty minutes after the official hour. Which is why we are on the Ojstrica path at 4:40 rather than 5:05.
Bled rewards people who know its clock. Civil dawn on that same June morning is 4:32am, the shore path runs about six kilometers around, and the climb from the Velika Zaka side up to the Ojstrica viewpoint takes about twenty minutes at a pace that does not ruin a dress. By 9am the promenade below belongs to day trippers and the light has gone hard. The whole argument for eloping here rests on what you do with the four hours before that.

A June day at Bled, from 4:40am to the castle lights
This is the shape we build most often in June, when the lake gives us fifteen hours and forty-six minutes of daylight and a dawn that starts before any bakery in town.
3:55am. We meet at your accommodation. Bled is small, so nothing on this day involves more than half an hour in a car.
4:40am. On the Ojstrica path in the blue. The ground is loose in places and there are roots across the trail, so we walk it with you rather than send you up it.
5:11am to 5:40am. Sunrise on paper, then sunrise in practice. The ridge holds the sun back, and when it finally comes through it comes from the left of the frame, not from behind the island. Stills work wide here. Film works long, because the mist on the water moves and a still frame cannot show that.
6:15am. Down at the water on the west shore, where the reeds are and nobody is. Vows here, if you want them somewhere quiet before anything official happens.
7:00am. Across to the island by pletna, the flat-bottomed boat that is rowed standing, by hand. The crossing takes about a quarter of an hour, longer into a headwind, and the boat is small enough that who sits in it is a planning decision rather than an afterthought.
8:00am. Ceremony hour. Bled Castle’s own wedding inquiry form takes ceremony times from 7am to 7pm, and it asks for the date and hour you have already reserved with the Radovljica administrative unit. The registry slot comes first and the venue second, which is the opposite of how most couples assume it works.
9:30am. Breakfast, dry socks, an hour off. We are not shooting.
11:00am to 3:30pm. The honest part of the day. Midday at Bled is high sun, warm haze and a lot of people, and no amount of skill makes that hour beautiful. So we either rest or we go inland where the light is filtered: the Radovna valley, the forest roads up toward Pokljuka, a meadow with the Julian Alps behind it and nothing else in the frame.
4:00pm. Bohinj, half an hour west. A different lake entirely, 4.2 kilometers long, inside Triglav National Park, with the stone bridge and the church at Ribčev Laz at one end and mountains standing straight up out of the water at the other. It is quieter than Bled and always has been.
7:30pm. Back to the basin for the last hour. In June the sun sets at 8:57pm to the northwest, which means the light comes across the lake rather than into it, and the castle rock stays warm long after the water has cooled off.
9:36pm. Civil dusk. The castle is lit, the promenade has emptied again, and we shoot slow frames until you are done.
Move that same day into autumn and every number changes. Here is what the light does across the year at Bled, which is the first thing we look at when you tell us a month.

October is the month we push hardest for. Cold nights and a warm lake put radiation fog on the water, and from the Ojstrica ledge you look down on a white basin with the church tower coming out of it. It does not happen every morning. When it does, nothing else in Slovenia comes close, and it is the reason we ask for two dawns in the plan rather than one.
One team on the island, the ridge and the gorge
Slovenia is where hiring photography and film separately shows up fastest, because almost every good location here has a physical limit on how many people can stand in it.
Take the pletna. It is a rowed boat, not a launch, and the oarsman is working the whole crossing. A photographer in the bow and a filmmaker in the stern is a conversation about weight and sightlines that has to happen before anyone steps aboard, not while you are halfway to the island. When we run the Expedition here we plan the boat as a shot: who is in it, who is already on the island shooting the arrival, whether a second boat leaves five minutes ahead.
The church on the island is the same problem indoors. It is small, and it is dark by the standards of anywhere you have been married before. Two people working in there have to agree positions before the ceremony starts, because there is no moving around behind a celebrant in a room that size. And the bell in the tower rings all morning once visitors are on the island, which matters enormously for audio and not at all for stills. The Expedition includes professional audio for vows where conditions allow, and at Bled the condition is the timing of the ceremony against the boats.
The Vintgar gorge is a third version of it. The walkway is wooden and narrow, it runs 1,600 meters along the Radovna river, a few feet above the water, and it goes one way only, with a separate trail bringing you back overland. Nobody reverses in there. So we sequence the gorge in advance: the filmmaker moves ahead and sets, the photographer stays with you, and the two swap at agreed points. A photographer and a videographer who met that morning would spend the gorge stepping around each other, and you would feel it in every frame.
Aerials follow the same logic. Bled itself sits outside Triglav National Park, while Bohinj and the upper Radovna are inside it, and inside the park a drone flies on the park’s terms rather than ours. That is a question we settle in the planning stage, so nothing in your timeline depends on a shot we have not confirmed we can make. Drone footage is included in every experience where it is legal, safe and appropriate.
The result of all this is a set of stills and a film that were built from the same plan and the same light, not stitched together afterwards by two people with different ideas about the morning. Our published galleries and films are the honest version of what that looks like — the ridge frames, the boat, the flat afternoons we chose not to shoot.
Bled is busy, and that is a timetable problem
The thing couples ask us before they ask anything else: will our photographs look like every other picture of this lake, and will there be a tour bus in the back of them. Fair question. Bled is one of the most photographed lakes in Europe and it has been for a century.
Here is what is actually true. In July you will have company on the Ojstrica ledge at sunrise, six or eight people, and they are all polite and all looking the same way. By 9am the promenade is genuinely busy. The island receives boats steadily through the middle of the day. None of that is fixable by wishing, and any photographer who tells you the lake is empty in August has not been there in August.
What is fixable is your clock and your map. A weekday dawn in the second half of September has the ledge to itself more often than not. The west shore reeds are quiet at 6am even in high season. The Radovna valley, the meadows under Pokljuka and the far end of Bohinj have no tour-bus traffic at all, because there is nothing there to sell a ticket to. And the ceremony itself does not have to happen at lake level: put it inland or higher, and the lake becomes the thing you visit at dawn rather than the thing your whole day competes for.

Where coverage starts, and the euro costs Slovenia adds
The Adventure is one full day with either a dedicated photographer or a dedicated filmmaker. The Expedition is one full day with both, working together, from $7,900. The Odyssey runs from two to seven days across one or several destinations with photography and film throughout, quoted as a custom proposal. Our flights, accommodation and ordinary travel to Slovenia are included. Slovenia is on the euro, and these are the third-party costs a Bled or Bohinj day typically adds, all of them paid by you directly:
- The administrative unit’s fee for a civil ceremony, which is higher outside official premises and outside official hours
- A court-certified interpreter, because the civil ceremony is conducted in Slovene, plus certified translation of your documents
- The venue’s own ceremony fee: Bled Castle publishes a wedding price list with VAT at 22 percent included, and the island church is arranged through the parish
- Pletna hire across to the island, priced per boat and per crossing
- Vintgar gorge entry, currently around 10 euros per adult, plus its parking and shuttle arrangement
- Paid parking almost everywhere around the lake, and the Vogel cable car at Bohinj if we go up
- Anything with a specialist attached: a mountain guide, a private boat, a 4×4 up a forest track, a helicopter

Common questions
Can two Americans legally marry at Lake Bled?
Yes. The civil ceremony is booked through the administrative unit that covers Bled, which is Radovljica, and your documents need translating and legalizing well in advance. The ceremony is held in Slovene, so a court-certified interpreter attends. Plenty of couples handle the legal paperwork at home instead and hold a ceremony here with a celebrant, which removes every document deadline from the trip.
Do we need a permit to be photographed at Lake Bled?
It depends entirely on where you stand. The lake shore, the island, the castle and the gorge each have a different owner and a different set of rules, and some of them care about tripods and drones rather than cameras. Permit research and guidance are part of every experience; the fees themselves are paid by you.
Is Bled Island worth it for a one-day elopement?
If the church matters to you, yes, and we would put the crossing at 7am before the day boats start. If it does not, the island is more useful as the thing in your frame than the thing you stand on, and that hour is often better spent on the west shore or up at Ojstrica.
Which month gives the mist over the lake?
Late September through November, with October the strongest. It needs a cold clear night after a mild day, so it is odds rather than a guarantee, and we build the morning so it works either way.
Can you fly a drone over Bohinj?
Bohinj sits inside Triglav National Park, so aerials there run on the park’s consent and its time window. We confirm what is possible for your date during planning and never build a sequence around a shot we have not cleared.
How far can we get from Bled in a single day?
Ljubljana airport is about 35 kilometers away, Bohinj is half an hour, and the Soča valley over the Vršič pass is roughly two hours in summer, with 50 hairpin bends and a high point of 1,611 meters. The pass is a late-spring question rather than a March one, so early-season days stay low. Two regions in one day is possible; two regions done properly is an Odyssey shape.
What happens if it rains from 4am to midnight?
We shoot. Rain at Bled gives you low cloud on the Karavanke and dark water, the gorge and the forest read better wet than dry, and inversions often sit below the higher meadows on exactly those days. Every plan we send includes the sheltered version, and moving the order of a day is normal here rather than a crisis.
How much of the planning do we have to do ourselves?

Slovenia suits couples who will get up in the dark, walk twenty minutes uphill on loose ground without complaining about their shoes, and let the order of a day move when the fog does something better than the plan. There is a version of this valley for both, and the only wrong move is not telling us which one you want.
